Hertfordshire road maintenance costs 81% more than average

26 Feb 2010

Figures which compare spending by different councils on road maintenance confirm what many of us have believed for some time - Herts County Council is appallingly inefficient at mending the roads.

Herts CC spends £12,643 for every kilometre of road maintained, compared with an average of £6,971 for similar councils. They say that is because there is 35% more traffic in Herts, but that scarcely accounts for them spending 81% more on maintenance!

Certainly they are not spending the money to maintain the roads to a higher standard.

This vindicates what the Liberal Democrats been saying all along - namely that Herts Highways, a partnership between the council and the private sector, is delivering very poor value.
